  Our design philosophy

is to create and produce handcrafted gifts of high quality, classic, elegant, simplicity at an affordable price.

In jewelry, we design and create pieces which, while unique, are built on classic designs which provide high quality, yet affordable jewelry for women in the workplace and women at play. Pieces shown on this site are limited to stock on hand and while individual beads and elements may be used in several pieces, each piece is unique as no two beads and/or elements are exactly the same. Also, all pieces are created individually, by hand, so no two pieces will be exactly the same, though some similarities may exist.

  What is a Poicat?

First off, “poicat” is a Hawaiian Pidgin-English slang term. It’s literal translation would probably be: a cat with mixed blood. The term “poi dog” is commonly used in Hawaii to refer to “mutts“ which we all know are the best dogs... but of course, we believe the best pets are cats…therefore “poicat”. We think this is a good name because on this site you will find a mixture of “poi-fect” handcrafted gifts which will include jewelry, gel candles, soaps and bath salts and many other artistic crafts.

The origins of the word are lost but this is what I believe…

Enter the taro (or kalo) plant. Taro refers to several different varieties of tuber which are first steamed, then pounded (and mixed) together with water to make “poi.” So…..poi is a mixture of several kinds of taro.

If you’ve never tasted poi, don’t believe the rumors that it tastes like wallpaper paste. I am so tired (bohhhring) of hearing this comparison. Yes, poi may taste bland (if your taste buds are not used to it) but no blander or “wallpaper tasting” than mashed potatoes is to me. Remember poi (and taro) is our starch (your potato) and like your “potato” it is only a part of the meal.

  Introducing the poicats

And now…. without further ado we would like to introduce you to pictures of our very own “boys” or “poicats”. They are the “models” who appear in bas relief on our business cards, earring, bracelet, necklace, anklet cards.

First, there is Crawford Aloysius who was named after Broderick Crawford, the old-time star of “Highway Patrol”. BC was portly and drove a black and white patrol car. If you haven’t made the connection yet, Crawford is the oldest and fattest of our “poicats”. He is also black and white.

And last, but not least is Merlin Javert. Merlin is our “lomi lomi” specialist who is ever vigilant and always on guard. And, like Inspector Javert, his single-minded tenacity ensures he always gets his man/cricket/fly/spider/you-name-it.

Question: Who appears on the homepage?

Answer: Merlin Javert.
